In a startling revelation, a recent poll from the Ichikowitz Family Foundation has found that nearly 60% of African youth are contemplating emigration due to pervasive corruption that undermines their prospects for a better future. The survey, which gathered insights from over 5,600 respondents aged 18 to 24 across 16 countries in Africa, highlighted unchecked corruption as the primary obstacle to achieving their aspirations.

The 2024 African Youth Survey indicates a significant discontent among young people, with many expressing skepticism regarding their governments' efforts to combat corruption. The poll, conducted through face-to-face interviews in January and February, reveals that a majority view Africa as heading in the "wrong direction." Despite this grim outlook, there was a slight increase in "Afro-optimism," with 37% of respondents expressing some level of hope compared to previous years.

North America emerged as the most desired destination for emigration, closely followed by Western European countries such as the UK, France, Germany, and Spain. The findings underscore a growing desire for systemic change, with many youths advocating for stricter sanctions against corrupt officials, including bans from running for office, and a call for a different governance model.

The survey emphasizes a critical need for governments across the continent to address the challenges posed by corruption, as the aspirations of Africa's youth hang in the balance.
