Nigerian chess master and social impact advocate Tunde Onakoya is set to attempt his second Guinness World Record (GWR) by engaging in a 70-hour chess marathon in New York City's Times Square. This endeavor, scheduled from April 17 to 20, 2025, aims to surpass his previous 60-hour record set in April 2024.
Partnering again with U.S. National Master Shawn Martinez, Onakoya's mission extends beyond personal achievement; it seeks to raise awareness and funds for the education of homeless children through his initiative, Chess in Slums Africa.
He said his goal goes beyond breaking the record, but to inspire the world and raise support for a noble cause of building the biggest free school for homeless children in Nigeria.
Onakoya will be joined by some of his trained children from the Chess in Slums Africa initiative, who will participate in the record attempt for a few hours, showcasing their talents and potential.
The event is not only a testament to Onakoya's dedication to chess but also his commitment to social causes. By attempting this record, he continues to use the game as a platform to highlight the importance of education and provide opportunities for underprivileged children.
