In the 2023/24 season, Bayer Leverkusen extended their unbeaten streak after a dramatic last-minute goal by Josip Stanisic secured a 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. The hosts were poised to hand Xabi Alonso’s side their first defeat and boost their chances of a top-four finish, thanks to Niclas Fullkrug’s 81st-minute opener. However, late drama unfolded as Leverkusen managed to salvage a draw.

Having been crowned Bundesliga champions recently and eliminating West Ham from the UEFA Europa League midweek, a fatigued Leverkusen faced a buoyant Dortmund team. Despite controlling possession for large parts of the match, Leverkusen struggled to break through. Marcel Sabitzer came closest for the hosts in the first half, but Finnish goalkeeper Lukas Hradecky denied his effort.

Nathan Tella had Leverkusen’s best chance, but opposing goalkeeper Gregor Kobel blocked his close-range shot. Dortmund appeared to end Leverkusen’s unbeaten run when Sabitzer set up Niclas Fullkrug for a powerful strike.

However, in injury time, Leverkusen’s Alejandro Grimaldo delivered a corner that Josip Stanisic met with his head, preserving their unbeaten record. Dortmund, currently in fifth place, faces RB Leipzig next weekend, with only a two-point gap separating them in the battle for fourth.
