Open Gambia Platform (OG) investigations have revealed a lack of transparency and accountability surrounding the procurement contract for one hundred vehicles initially specified for the OIC summit. The contract was awarded to Mohammed Jah’s company, Espace Motors, a subsidiary of the Q group.

The controversy began when only 87 cars were delivered during the official handover at Macarty Square, despite the tender document specifying 100 vehicles. Two letters of petition addressed to President Barrow expressed disappointment and concern from other vehicle companies that participated in the bidding process. They alleged an unfair and possibly illegal tender process, with the contract awarded to Espace Motors without proper justification.

An anonymous Finance Ministry officer revealed that the entire tender process was fraudulent. A select group of senior officials controlled the procurement process, ensuring the contract went to Espace Motors. The pre-financing arrangement was used to disqualify other bidders lacking connections with the regime.

Espace Motors’ delivered vehicles also raised red flags. Discrepancies included missing 13 vehicles, non-compliant SUVs, and salon cars. The market prices of these vehicles significantly differed from the duty-free unit prices charged by Espace Motors.

The situation points to grand corruption, benefiting Mohammed Jah, President Barrow, and the NPP party while burdening Gambian taxpayers. Citizens are now demanding an investigation by their  members of parliament and the national audit office to address the lack of transperancy and aacountability in the entire process.
