Ghana’s Black Stars emerged victorious against Mali’s Eagles, recording a 2-1 win in Bamako. The victory was sealed by a dramatic late goal from substitute Jordan Ayew, marking Ghana’s first win in six games and propelling them to joint-top of Group I.

The match began with Mali on the offensive, seeking an early lead. However, Ghana’s goalkeeper, Lawrence Ati-Zigi, made a series of brilliant saves, denying the Eagles’ attempts at goal. Despite Ghana’s Mohammed Kudus sending their first shot of the game over the crossbar in the 16th minute, the Black Stars gradually found their footing.

As the first half seemed destined to end in a draw, Mali’s Kamory Doubia broke the deadlock, scoring in added time after his initial strike deflected off Alexander Djiku. The Eagles led 1-0 at halftime.

The second half saw Ghana intensify their efforts. Antoine Semenyo narrowly missed an equalizer early on, failing to connect with Tariq Lamptey’s low cross. However, Ernest Nuamah, the Olympique Lyon forward, made no mistake in the 58th minute, heading home Salis Abdul Samed’s cross to level the score.

As the match neared its end, Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey had a golden opportunity to secure a win for Ghana, but his one-on-one effort was saved by the Malian goalkeeper. Undeterred, the Black Stars pressed on, and their persistence paid off when the ball fell to Jordan Ayew in the dying minutes of the game. Ayew fired past the Malian defense, securing all three points for Ghana.

The victory brings Ghana’s tally to six points from three games, placing them behind Comoros on goal difference. The Black Stars are set to face the Central African Republic at the Baba Yara Stadium on matchday four of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series. This win has undoubtedly boosted their confidence as they continue their journey towards World Cup qualification.
