The House of Representatives Committee on National Security and Intelligence has recommended the immediate purchase of new aircraft for President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima, citing safety concerns and high maintenance costs for the current fleet.
The committee's report noted that three of the six aircraft in the Presidential Air Fleet are currently unserviceable, and the 19-year-old Boeing 737 used by the president is undergoing annual maintenance. The report emphasized the need for safe and comfortable carriers befitting the status and responsibilities of the president and vice president.
The lawmakers' request has sparked debate among Nigerians, with some questioning the motive behind the move and others labeling it as insensitive. However, the committee's chairperson, Ahmed Satomi, emphasized the importance of prioritizing the president's and other VIPs' safety.
The report also highlighted the cost inefficiency of maintaining aged aircraft, which leads to longer downtime and higher fleet running costs. The committee recommended procuring new aircraft akin to Air Force Two of the USA for the office of the vice president, which can also serve other high-ranking officials.
The presidency has received the committee's advisory, and it remains to be seen whether the government will act on the recommendations.
