Former President Donald Trump has announced his support for granting green cards to foreign graduates from US colleges, a departure from his typically hard-line stance on immigration. This comes as President Joe Biden has also made moves to relax visa rules and provide a pathway to citizenship for certain immigrants.
Trump made the remarks on a podcast, stating that he believes foreign graduates should receive a green card as part of their diploma, allowing them to stay in the country. This would apply to graduates from two-year programs, doctoral graduates, and anyone who completes a college program.
Trump argued that the US needs "smart people" and that companies are unable to make deals with foreign talent due to uncertainty around their ability to stay in the country. He promised to end this issue on day one, should he be re-elected.
This shift in Trump's stance comes after his previous presidency was marked by a focus on border security and stricter immigration policies, including the construction of a wall on the US-Mexico border and a travel ban on mostly Muslim countries.
Meanwhile, President Biden has also made moves on immigration, relaxing visa rules for spouses of US nationals and simplifying the process for "Dreamers" to obtain work visas. However, Biden has also taken a harder line on immigration in recent weeks, signing an executive order barring migrants who enter the US illegally from claiming asylum when numbers surge past 2,500 in a day.
The issue of immigration remains a key election issue, with both Trump and Biden seeking to appeal to voters with their stance on the matter.
