The House of Representatives has approved President Bola Tinubu's request to extend the 2023 Appropriation Act and the Supplementary Appropriation Act until December 31, 2024. The extension was granted after a closed-door session, despite initial opposition from some lawmakers.

The request was made to enable the government to fully implement the two budgets, which amount to N21.8 trillion and N2.17 trillion, respectively. The extension means that the 2023 budgets will run concurrently with the 2024 budget.

Some lawmakers had expressed concerns that the extension would disrupt the January-December budget cycle and lead to four budgets running concurrently. However, the House Leader, Julius Ihonvbere, argued that the request was straightforward and would not change the content of the Acts.

After a rowdy plenary session, the Speaker, Abbas Tajudeen, called for a closed-door session, which lasted for 30 minutes. Following the session, the lawmakers agreed to grant the extension, with the assurance that the president would ensure the speedy implementation of the two budgets.
