England's historic struggles with penalty shootouts appear to be a thing of the past, according to former defender Matt Upson. The Three Lions have won three of their last four shootouts under Gareth Southgate, including a perfect 5-3 victory over Switzerland in the Euro 2024 quarter-finals.

Upson credits the team's "arrogance and confidence" for their newfound success from the spot. He praised the players for their mental toughness, saying, "Sometimes, these key moments and big games can come down to that sort of bottle."

All five English players - Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney, and Trent Alexander-Arnold - converted their penalties with ease, showcasing their fearlessness under pressure. Toney's unique approach, which involves staring straight at the goalkeeper and not looking at the ball, caught the eye. He explained that it's his routine and it's working, having scored 30 penalties in his career.

Upson praised Toney's psychology, saying it allows him to adjust and tweak his shot, resulting in precise finishes. The former defender believes this newfound confidence will serve England well in future high-pressure situations.

As Alan Shearer put it, "Pressure is for tyres." England's penalty shootout woes seem to be a thing of the past, and their perfect win over Switzerland is a testament to their growth and mental toughness.
