US Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle resigns after security failures during an assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump at a Pennsylvania rally, where one person was killed and three others injured, including Trump.

Washington D.C. - US Secret Service Director Kim Cheatle has resigned following intense scrutiny over security lapses surrounding the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump at a campaign rally in Pennsylvania.

The resignation comes after graphic bodycam footage emerged showing Secret Service and local law enforcement officers standing over the lifeless body of the gunman, Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20. The footage, captured by Butler County Emergency Services Unit, was posted online by Senator Chuck Grassley's office.

The incident, which occurred 10 days ago, resulted in the death of one audience member, Corey Comperatore, 50, and injured two others. Trump was also injured in the right ear.

Lawmakers had demanded a full investigation into the incident, questioning Cheatle about security preparations during a six-hour House of Representatives Oversight Committee hearing on Monday. Cheatle took responsibility for the security lapses but initially resisted calls to resign.

In her resignation letter, Cheatle stated that as director, she took "full responsibility for the security lapses" and described the shooting as "the most significant operational failure at the Secret Service in decades."

The incident has raised serious concerns about the Secret Service's ability to protect high-profile individuals, including former presidents and presidential candidates.
