A magnitude 4.1 earthquake hit Woods Point, Victoria, believed to be an aftershock from the 2021 record 5.9 magnitude quake. No damage reported, but residents warned to expect more seismic activity in the region.

A magnitude 4.1 earthquake struck Woods Point, a small town in Victoria, early Wednesday morning, with no damage reported. Geoscience Australia senior seismologist Phil Cummins believes the tremor was an aftershock from the record 5.9 magnitude earthquake that hit the region in September 2021.

The 2021 quake caused damage in Melbourne and was felt as far away as Canberra, Sydney, and Adelaide. Cummins noted that the energy released in the latest tremor was about 900 times less than the previous earthquake.

Since the 2021 event, there have been around a dozen earthquakes with magnitudes higher than three in the area. The latest tremor was felt in various parts of Victoria, including Melbourne's north, the Yarra Ranges, and East Gippsland.

Residents are warned to expect more earthquakes in the region, as aftershocks can continue for years after a significant quake.
