He believes that opposition teams will now focus their strategies on neutralizing Palmer’s impact, stating, “Every team talk is going to be ‘Stop Cole Palmer playing.’”

Merson drew parallels to former Arsenal striker Emmanuel Adebayor, who thrived during the 2007-08 season before facing increased scrutiny post-contract renewal. He remarked that while Palmer's previous season was indeed impressive, sustaining such performance levels under heightened defensive attention would be a formidable task. “If he gets 15 goals next season, I will be like, ‘Wow, fair play to you.’ 15 is a lot of goals,” Merson concluded.
