In a significant enforcement action, 75 residents of Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, have been convicted for indiscriminate refuse dumping within just one week. This development underscores the state government's commitment to combat environmental pollution and safeguard public health.
According to reports from DAILY POST, individuals found guilty of violating the state's environmental laws now face severe penalties, including three months of imprisonment or fines ranging from N30,000 to N50,000. The Kwara State government is responding decisively to the rising concerns over environmental diseases linked to improper waste management.
During a recent inspection of operational vehicles used by Waste Management Consultants, the Commissioner for Environment, Hajia Nafisat Musa Buge, emphasized the need for these consultants to be proactive in their duties. “The government will not treat the issue of indiscriminate dumping of refuse with kid gloves," she stated, reinforcing the administration's dedication to maintaining a healthy environment for all residents.
In the wake of this initiative, an Ilorin Magistrate Court sentenced an additional 14 offenders to three-month jail terms, bringing the total number of convictions to 75 within the week. This reinforces the government's resolve to eradicate waste dumping practices that compromise community health.
Alhaji Zakariyahu Tahir, Chairman of the Association of Waste Consultants, praised the commissioner for her decisive actions against unlawful dumping and highlighted the importance of public cooperation in achieving a cleaner environment.
As the Kwara State administration, led by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, continues to enforce strict waste management policies, residents are urged to comply with environmental regulations to promote a cleaner and safer Ilorin.
