The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning of a nationwide strike if its President, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is arrested or detained by the Nigeria Police. This announcement came on Tuesday following an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting convened to address the police's invitation to Ajaero regarding allegations of terrorism financing.

During the meeting held at the NLC headquarters, the leadership resolved that Ajaero should comply with the police invitation. However, they instructed their legal adviser to seek an extension for Ajaero's appearance before the authorities. Deputy President Ado Kabiru Sani emphasized the importance of the situation, urging the workforce to remain vigilant and prepared for further instructions.

Sani stated, “As a committed labor center, we will honor the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization, but we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time. In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership.”

The NLC's ultimatum underscores the growing tensions between labor unions and the government, as they prepare to mobilize their members in response to any potential actions against their president.
