The Ebonyi State Government has taken significant action against illegal toll collection practices by arresting more than 25 individuals suspected of extorting motorists across the state. Commissioner for Transportation, Igboke Collins Emeka, announced these developments during a press briefing in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

Emeka emphasized that the arrests are part of the government's broader initiative to combat the issue of double taxation that has long troubled motorists in Ebonyi. “The government is trying to reduce the double taxation that motorists are passing through. We are working hard to make sure there is peace in the transport sector and for the people to have trust in what the current administration is doing,” he stated.

To address the problem, the commissioner revealed that his office collaborated with the Board of Internal Revenue to compile a list of contractors involved in transport-related contracts. This led to a meeting with contractors and local government representatives, where they were instructed to register with the transportation ministry.

Emeka noted that nearly 27 illegal toll collection points had been identified, with several individuals arrested and charged. He assured that the ministry would also review the revenue generation activities of legitimate contractors to ensure compliance with government standards.

The commissioner expressed optimism about the current administration's efforts, stating, “For now, we have gained confidence from the transporters; they are happy with the way we are going.”

Regarding the potential implementation of electronic payment systems for tolls, Emeka indicated that the decision lies with the Ministry of Finance, emphasizing the governor's commitment to public input and consultation before any changes are made.

He concluded by urging the public to adhere to traffic regulations and to support Governor Nwifuru’s administration, highlighting the importance of collective efforts for the betterment of the state. “Let us give him that helping hand, support him in prayer, support him in all that he said we should do,” Emeka urged, encouraging citizens to believe in the government's initiatives.
