When gospel singer Tope Alabi declined to perform at Liz Anjorin’s surprise birthday party, fans were left wondering why. In this article, we unpack the real reasons.

Tope Alabi and her team reportedly arrived at the venue, ready to fulfill what they thought was a simple birthday surprise performance. But as soon as Tope discovered that the celebrant was Liz Anjorin, she refused to step out of her car, citing personal reasons.

The singer later left the event entirely and refunded the full performance fee.

According to Dr. Oreofe Williams, a filmmaker and insider who helped coordinate the booking, the entire arrangement was set up without revealing Liz Anjorin’s identity. Williams claims he was told it was for “someone the organizer cherished a lot,” and assumed it might be the planner’s wife or a private individual.

Tope’s husband, Soji Alabi, agreed to the event only after giving a 70% discount, bringing the performance fee down to ₦2.5 million (not ₦3.5 million as earlier claimed). The money was paid in three tranches.

The real issue? The identity of the celebrant was intentionally hidden from both Williams and the Alabis until they arrived at the venue.

Once Tope realized who the celebrant was, her team chose to leave immediately. Dr. Williams stated:

“They felt deceived and were not given the endeared privilege of a choice by conscience.”

This wasn't about Liz being a controversial figure, it was about integrity and transparency. You don’t surprise a gospel minister with a public figure they may have personal or professional reservations about. That’s not a surprise, it’s a setup.

In response, Liz Anjorin called out Tope Alabi in a fiery Instagram video, claiming she was disrespected and that she “can’t be bullied.” She also posted payment receipts to prove that money had been sent.

But the Alabis also released evidence of the instant refund, backing up their side of the story.
